Computer Training Systems (CTS) has been providing computer–based aviation training programs to our customers for almost a quarter century. With extensive record-keeping and an easy to use course administrator, the training employs three proven training techniques to teach three major elements, general aviation subjects, specific aircraft training and training based on our customers’ Ops specs and procedures. The techniques used include lessons, tutorials and exams.
Lessons Lessons are extremely interactive. Basically, they begin by asking a multiple-choice question with randomly placed answers. If up to date on the subject, the pilot should be able to answer the question correctly. After answering each question, the pilot is provided with instant feedback as to the accuracy of his/her answer. Each question is followed by additional information that serves to reinforce the correct answer and provide other information relevant to the subject. When appropriate for the subject material, dynamic graphics are an integral part of the additional information. Each lesson only takes about 15 minutes. If the pilot misses any questions, they are repeated at the end of the lesson. Since the answers are randomly placed, the pilot must know the correct answer and may not memorize its position. When the pilot answers all questions in the lesson, and not until, the lesson is complete, the completion date is recorded on his record and he can move on to the next lesson. The exciting element is that the pilot’s performance is corrected until he achieves 100% accuracy. There is no threat to the pilot since the record keeping system only records successful achievement of lesson completion, not how hard he had to work to achieve this goal.
Tutorials Tutorials employ a step-by-step building block approach providing key elements of each aviation subject that is critical for today’s professional pilot. Lessons employ extensive use of questions and allow the pilot exciting interaction in an absolutely non-threatening environment. Our programs employ tutorials with two basic levels of sophistication. When we started almost 20 years ago, the tutorials consisted of graphics with supporting text. Our newest tutorials include dynamic 3D animated graphics, engaging audio and captivating student interaction. Tutorials are used extensively in both the general subjects program and in specific aircraft programs.
Exams Comprehensive exams are drawn from large banks of multiple-choice questions, typically up to 200. Not only are the questions randomly selected, each answer, including the correct one is randomly placed. The result is a potential of millions of test combinations, prohibiting the exam from being compromised. The pilot is allowed to select any answer, change his selections and review his test before turning it in to the computer for grading. After indicating that he is ready to be graded, he receives instant feedback, his grade is recorded and he receives a mandatory critique that reviews any mistakes he may have made on the exam and reinforces the correct answers.
