It’s Safe to Say You’ll Love the Benefits of IS-BAO

What is IS-BAO?

The International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) is a set of guidelines developed by the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) to standardize business practices around the world. Because the IS-BAO standards were created with the assistance of businesses from four continents, these standards are truly a globally recognized international collaboration. Following IS-BAO promotes assurance and recognition in flight departments of any size everywhere, including yours.

Safety Benefits of IS-BAO

In 2006, an independent safety analyst took data from 1998 to 2003 in jet and turboprop business aircraft to determine the potential impact IS-BAO standards would have had on these incidents if they had been implemented at the time. IBAC reported over 550 aircraft accidents and incidents throughout the five-year period, but the final sample comprised of 297 accidents in two categories: “Destroyed” (125) or “Seriously Damaged” (172). The research concluded that between 35% and 55% of the incidents could have certainly or probably (on a 5 point scale ranging 1= certainly to 5= none) been prevented had IS-BAO guidelines been followed. By implementing these high standards in safety, not only would your company save the headache and heartache of an accident, but potentially lower your insurance premiums. In the IBAC December 2005 newsletter, they reported working with the Aviation Insurance Association to ensure complete knowledge on the safety benefits achieved through following IS-BAO guidelines. IBAC worked with underwriters, brokers, and agents to relay the serious decrease in potential for incidents with IS-BAO standards put in place. After doing so, several operations reported achieving a significant reduction in their insurance premiums due to their IS-BAO registration. In a December 2010 report from the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), Katherine Perfetti, standards manager at IBAC, noted that “many insurance providers are very supportive of the IS-BAO program… [and potentially provide] premium reductions and more favorable insurance terms and products” to those following IS-BAO.
