The New Kid in Town: ADS-B Overview
ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, is part of the FAA's Next-Gen system and requires that operators comply with the new airspace and avionics performance requirements in 14 CFR 91.225 and 91.227 by January 1st, 2020. These new regulations require that most aircraft flying within the national airspace system be equipped with ADS-B Out using 1090ES or 978 UAT.

With these new rules in mind, CTS developed an ADS-B Overview course in accordance with the recommended training guidance provided in AC 90-114, EASA AMC 20-24, and FAA Order 8900.1. This overview is an ideal introduction to ADS-B through a fully animated tutorial, lessons, and a comprehensive exam. This course can be completed in approximately 1.5 hours and will provide the necessary knowledge toward meeting the training requirements for issuance of OpSpec/MSpec/LOA A153.

ADS-B Overview includes seven modules, beginning with an Overview and System Description. This section covers the regulatory requirements of ADS-B, how the system works to provide surveillance information, and an outline of broadcast services available to aircraft equipped with ADS-B In. ADS-B Operations covers airspace requirements, operational exceptions and deviations, performance requirements, and ADS-B operations outside of the U.S. ADS-B Procedures takes students through flight plan codes, the importance of entering a correct Flight ID and the use of the anonymous 24-bit address option on UAT transmitters, as well as abnormal operations.

While only ADS-B out is currently mandated by the new regulations, ADS-B In offers valuable tools to increase a pilot's situational awareness and allows two new procedures to be accomplished with the assistance of ADS-B In information obtained from nearby aircraft. The next three modules of the course, ADS-B In Services, ADS-B In-Trail Procedures, and CDTI Assisted Visual Separation (CAVS) cover these features and procedures, including display symbols and the criteria and procedures for In-Trail and CAVS procedures. The course wraps up with an overview of ADS-B Human Factors.
